Other stairway Photographers

Philippe Ramette

This is again a famous photographer who has amazing surreal images, his most famous are his collection of an individual who masters in visual illusions. Even though he doesn't have any staircase photography, he gave me the idea of creating an illusion involving them that is just as good and effective as his. The idea i had was having someone either walking forwards but flipping it so they are walking the opposite way but features like there hair would suggest they weren't. I also had the idea of someone being bigger than the stairs and trying to go down it like it was a slide which would add more of a humorous element to the image which not many photographers go for. Another idea i had was of someone standing midway in the stairs but the where lying down and there feet made it look like the where stuck similar to the one Philippe did but she was walking up the stairs that way. I then developed this idea to make it seem like the where falling backwards but really due to it being flipped it appeared the model was falling forwards instead. Further more i could have a side view of the stairs where someones hair is showing they are holding on to the rail but from a different angle. The models hair would be falling in front of there face and down instead of behind so it appears they are falling from the wrong angle. This would be quiet difficult to do and may not look as realistic as Phillippes.

'Signs, stairs, subway, seconds, strangers, spontaneous. Lovers walking up the stairs - growing old, growing young'. This the quote that follows her famous image below of two people who choose the escalator over the stairs. I love this image as it shows that he is helping his wife up the escalator  where as on the other side the other two people just walk down with such ease. The lighting at the bottom of the escalator almost highlights the couple so that you can see clearly what they are doing and the struggle you can imagine they could be having. When i see this image, i imagine that on the stairs side, they are rushing to be older for more freedom and responsibilities etc, where as the old are taking there time, being careful and taking it easy as they don't want to become any older. This is represented by the staircase as you can run and walk down it at your own speed with no worries about how your going to get up or down, where as the escalator shows the complete opposite. It shows that you will get to the top easier, with no problems or issues that the stairs would cause.

This photographer has done two extremely good pictures of stairs that i think would sit nicely with my topic for the exam, and allow me to make them my own, adding more of a twist to them. He is a photographer that i found on Flickr so there isn't much information about him to discuss, however his pictures are a range of different genres and are all very good. For the first image i could again manipulate it by having a ghost like figure in a corner behind the wall or at the top that the viewer wouldn't pick up on straight away, leaving the image being more mysterious and more than just an architectural shot. I would again also have fog that the ghostly figure could be appearing from, and is also a classical horror film sign of a ghost or that something isn't right. This image makes it appear that there is something better and happier at the top of the stairs than at the bottom which seems like a continuous effective theme that a lot of photographers uses when taking images of stairways. For the second image they have stuck to the rule of thirds so its exactly in your face and you see the staircase straight away, but instead of viewing it from the front you can see it from behind. My idea from this is to have the model standing at the bottom of the stairs but the image is being taken from the back, and then they would be looking onto different environments in each image, for example famine and illness, then massive fields with animals such as deer in etc to show the contrasts of situations and places you see in life.

There was no information of who took this image but i think it a really quirky cleaver way of using staircases within an image. This image makes it look as if hes climbing into another world and if it was to be remade you can do so much with it. The areas he seems to be climbing into is up a tree in a forest which allows you to imagine what hes actually climbing up there to get to and if he will find it. They also look casually dressed which somehow makes the image appear just normal and not bizarre in anyway. I then went on to see what other photographers i could find that where similar to this, to see what i could do if i wanted to replicate these for development. I saw that someone called Laura Williams took photos like the one below with a mirror that could be just as effective. This image would require a lot of Photoshop which could be a struggle but would be worth it.
